Before we get into the article, we would like to note that there are not any current plans to reopen these ski areas.
Bald Mountain – Rangeley, ME
Closed 1960s due to competition with Saddleback and financial issues
Opening for a brief period of time, Bald Mountain was overshadowed from the start by Saddleback Mountain and even worked together with Saddleback to put on some events. The area has been redeveloped into Rangeley Sporting Clays and Trap Range and has hiking trails on the mountain.
Chances Bald Mountain returns: 5%
Bald Mountain – Dedham, ME
Closed 1973 due to foreclosure
This Bald Mountain operated for more years than the other one, but it had too much debt to overcome and eventually foreclosed. The chairlifts were sold to Camden Snowbowl and the area currently has hiking trails on it.
Chances Bald Mountain returns: 3%
Black Cat Mountain – T1R8 WELS, ME
Closed 1960s due to competition in the area
Back Cat Mountain was a vibrant community mountain who could not overcome the competition in the area and eventually shut down. There were attempts to try and reopen the mountain, but everything eventually grew back in, and the New England Outdoor Center is located near the base area.
Chances Black Cat Mountain returns: 4%
Burnt Meadow Mountain – Brownfield, ME
Closed 1982 due to energy crisis and poor winters
Burnt Meadow Mountain was created to try and bring Brownfield, Maine out of poverty after a fire tore through the area and burnt a lot of the town. It closed after a bad winter and energy crisis but then reopened as the Zodiac Skiway before then shutting down again and was then shut down again due to poor winters. Everything is now overgrown and the lodge burnt down.
Chances Burnt Meadow Mountain returns: 2%
Eaton Mountain Ski Area – Skowhegan, ME
Closed 2019 due to financial reasons and poor winters
Eaton Mountain was one of the more recent closures that has come back multiple times. Most recently it closed after a rough winter and operated the tubing center for one winter after the ski part closed, Eaton remains idle.
Chances Eaton Mountain returns: 40%
Enchanted Mountain Ski Area – Jackman, ME
Closed 1973 due to financial problems
Enchanted Mountain had big plans but then did not pan out after competition in the area stunted the development of the mountain. The mountain was in a remote area and could not attract crowds. Today there is a communications tower on the top of the mountain with the lifts and buildings removed while there was also a logging development that took place.
Chances Enchanted Mountain returns: 3.2%
Evergreen Valley Ski Resort – Stoneham, ME
Closed 1982 due to financial problems
Evergreen had high hopes, but bad winters led to financial problems which eventually led to its closure. There were attempts to try and bring Evergreen back, but they did not amount to anything. The lifts have since removed but there is a chance it could be used as an event venue.
Chances Evergreen Valley returns: 5%
May Mountain – Island Falls, ME Closed 1990s due to no interest in investing in it
May Mountain was a small local development that served the community until the mid-90s. May Mountain has been left idle and has mostly overgrown but the T Bar remains standing.
Chances May Mountain returns: 35%
Mount Agamenticus – York, ME
Closed 1975 due to the project collapsing
Mount Agamenticus lasted about ten seasons due to poor winters and snowmaking system malfunctions. It was then slated for improvement but then the project collapsed and the land is now a conservation area with multipurpose trails.
Chances Mount Agamenticus returns: 2.2%
