Week 5 Top 30

Rain, rain, and more rain is what week five saw and a lot of mountains lost trails but some were able to retain snow better than others

1.        Mad River Glen (+9)

Most mountains lost trails but Mad River Glen kept it going with 40 trails open this weekend and continues to have a strong start to their season.

2.        Jay Peak (+5)

Jay Peak escaped most of the rain and instead got more and more terrain open off the Bonaventure Quad.

3.        Loon (+5)

The top mountain in New Hampshire right now, Loon has their main trails locked down for the season and will look to expand terrain.

4.        Stowe (+10)

With almost all the terrain around the Sunrise Six open, Stowe is a great option in northern Vermont.

5.        Killington (-2)

Killington continues to expand with Bear Mountain opening.

6.        Sunday River (+5)

Maine did not fair too well with the rain but Sunday River weathered it the best.

7.        Stratton (-5)

After losing a lot of trails in the rain, Stratton still retained 48 trails in good condition.

8.        Okemo (+1)

Jackson Gore is open which is one of the most underrated parts of Okemo.

9.        Smuggler’s Notch (+6)

With a majority of Sterling Mountain open and the addition of some of the learning center trails open takes some traffic off the main groomed trails.

10.   Waterville Valley (+3)

Waterville Valley has been holding steady with 23 trails and continues to hold onto their snow.

11.   Sugarloaf (-7)

Sugarloaf dropped from 78 to 28 trails after the rain but remains one of the top options in Maine.

12.   Bolton Valley (+14)

With Wilderness Peak open this early in the season providing a majority of the harder terrain on the mountain instead of the usual Vista Peak trails.

13.   Sunapee (+11)

Sunapee gets a bump as they open more trails and have some of the best views in New Hampshire.

14.   Mount Snow (+2)

Mount Snow dropped down to seven trails but worked their trail count up to 28 throughout the week.

15.   Cannon (-10)

Cannon drops after a stagnant week other than opening some of the learning center trails.

16.   Bretton Woods (-4)

Bretton Woods added Sawyer’s Swoop and Upper Swoop to the already open trails.

17.   Bromley (+2)

Getting the run arounds open was good and Bromley continues to have a good selection of early season trails.

18.   Berkshire East (+2)

Berkshire East remains the best option for skiing in southern New England by a wide margin.

19.   Crotched (+3)

Early season at Crotched is one of the best with four ways down the mountain which is great for the region.

20.   Saddleback (-19)

Saddleback drops heavily in the rankings as they dropped their trail count from roughly 60 trails to 15.

21.   Pico (NR)

Pico has opened for the season with a majority of summit runs but the only downside is they all funnel to the same trail.

22.   Sugarbush (+6)

Getting more terrain open was important for Sugarbush and they did that, now just wait for the new Heavens Gate Quad to open.

23.   Pats Peak (+4)

A majority of the trails on the left side are open while Twister provides some challenge to the mountain.

24.   Catamount (+6)

Catamount jumps up as a good option in Southern New England with a majority of terrain off the Meadows Triple.

25.   Gunstock (-8)

Gunstock drops because they only dropped Birch Glades this week while other mountains opened trails.

26.   Black Mountain NH (NR)

Kicking off a new season under Indy Pass ownership, Black Mountain had their best opening weekend in quite some time with top to bottom skiing off the double chair.

27.   Wildcat (-9)

Wildcat continues to offer top to bottom skiing off Catapult.

28.   Jiminy Peak (-5)

Jiminy Peak added to their trail count by five and that should provide some relief to the right side of the mountain.

29.   Southington (NR)

Southington is nearly 100% open which is almost unheard of this time of year in southern New England.

30.   Ragged (-9)

Ragged has eleven trails but offers no real challenge to skiers.

Biggest Jump: Bolton Valley (26 to 12)

Biggest Drop: Magic Mountain (6 to unranked)

New To Rankings: Pico, Black Mountain NH, Southington

Dropped From Rankings: Magic Mountain, Wachusett, Burke
