With two weeks until the tournaments begin, this article will go through where things stand in terms of the tournaments.
There will be two tournaments, the top 24 mountains will be in the main one and the next eight will be in the smaller tournament.
The points system is at the bottom of the page and has been getting totaled up since the preseason rankings.
The main tournament will be laid out like this: top point getting from each of the four regions (Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Southern New England) all get a bye week along with the next four highest point getters.
Here is where things stand right now for bye weeks:
Vermont 1: Sugarbush (Clinched Bye)
Maine 1: Sugarloaf (Clinched Playoff)
New Hampshire 1: Bretton Woods (Clinched Playoff)
Southern New England 1: Wachusett
Bye: Killington (Clinched Bye)
Bye: Stowe (Clinched Bye)
Bye: Okemo (Clinched Bye)
Bye: Jay Peak (Clinched Playoff)
Mountains that have clinched the playoffs (not including bye week mountains)
Sunday River
Waterville Valley
Loon
Stratton
Saddleback
Cannon
Smuggler’s Notch
Mount Snow
Wildcat
Mad River Glen
Bolton Valley
Current Spots Still Up for Grabs:
Southern New England Bye Week
Seeds 20-24
Scenarios:
With 60 points up for grabs and next week being independent mountain week, the power rankings will reflect it while only featuring the independently owned mountains, so any others have up to 30 points remaining.
Top Seed:
If Sugarbush finishes ahead of Killington, Sugarbush gets it.
If Sugarbush finishes 22nd or later and Killington finishes in 1st, Killington gets it.
If Killington finished in 4th or lower, Sugarbush gets it.
Maine Top Seed:
Sugarloaf hold a 7-point lead over Sunday River and a 42-point lead over Saddleback.
Since Saddleback will get a boost this week for being an Independent Mountain, they can lower the gap to at max 12 points.
The road for Saddleback to get the top Maine seed is to finish in first the next two weeks while Sugarloaf finishes 10th or later and Sunday River finishes 4th or later.
Sunday River can pass Sugarloaf if it finishes in first and Sugarloaf finishes 5th or later.
It can also happen is Sunday River gets 7 more points than Sugarloaf.
New Hampshire Top Seed:
Bretton Woods currently holds a 9-point lead over Waterville Valley and it’s a two-mountain race to the top.
Waterville Valley will likely get a huge boost this week with the Independent Mountain rankings and after next week, it will be much clearer on the scenarios.
Southern New England Top Seed:
Wachusett and Berkshire East are currently tied with Wachusett winning the tie breaker with highest single week ranking.
Ski Ward is also in play due to their very early season opening getting them a lot of points which currently leaves them 20 back.
All are Independent Mountains so they will all be in play setting up a fun final week.
Remaining Playoff Spots:
Sunapee is the 20 seed while having 48 more points than Ski Ward which is the first one out so they could clinch a spot this week even though they will not be ranked.
Gunstock has 47 more points but will be included in the rankings so they will likely be clinching this week.
Pats Peak has 27 more points than Ski Ward so they will likely not clinch this week but will receive a huge boost in points.
Berkshire East has just 20 more points and is tied with Wachusett so this week will tell a lot about how the final rankings might stack up for them.
Pleasant Mountain is holding onto the last seed with just 15 points up on Ski Ward and they will be inactive this week so they could fall out of a playoff spot if Ski Ward finishes 12th or higher.
On the outside looking in is Ski Ward, Bromley, and Jiminy Peak who all could make it but Jiminy Peak is the least likely of the three as they need Pleasant Mountain to finish no higher than 18th to make up the 21-point difference.
