Resurrecting a Ski Area: Southern New England

Before we get into the article, we would like to note that there are not any current plans to reopen these ski areas.

Woodbury – Woodbury, CT

Closed 2016 due to loss of ownership

Woodbury got off to a rough start before Rod Taylor saved the ski area and actually led it to be one of the better ones in Connecticut. Woodbury closed down after Taylor died but then the ski area operated another season before eventually closing due to a drought and uncertain leadership. Woodbury is currently for sale.

Chances Woodbury returns: 40%

Diamond Hill – Cumberland, RI

Closed 1980s due to poor winters

Diamond Hill was a state-owned ski area that then switched hands to private ownership. The ski area eventually closed after a few bad winters. Today the area has been repurposed as an outdoor space.

Pinetop – West Greenwich, RI

Closed 1980 due to poor winters

Pinetop was considered the top ski area in Rhode Island until the 70s when things started to decline. The base lodge was burnt down in the mid 80s and nothing remains of the ski area.

Chances Pinetop returns: 0%

Ski Valley – Cumberland, RI

Closed 1985 due to poor winters

Ski Valley ran into a similar fate that the other two Rhode Island ski areas ran into as the 1980s was not a very kind decade to the state in terms of snowfall. The ski area was replaced with condos and the iconic Ski Valley water tank was removed in 2016.

Chances Ski Valley returns: 0%
